More than 250 organizations signed a letter, on Monday, March 15, addressed to Congress and its speakers against setbacks in social and environmental legislation.

The letter reinforces the need for the Legislature to focus its efforts on discussions to combat and confront the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, it stresses the importance of society’s participation in social and environmental decisions.

The organizations oppose the so-called “package of destruction” proposed by the president that suggests legislative changes in the following areas: mining and indigenous lands (Bill 191/2020), environmental licensing (Bill 3,729/2004) and land-title regularization (Bill 2,633/2020).

“If these proposals are approved, they will drive a series of negative impacts, worsening social and environmental conditions in the country and its image around the world,” reads the document.
