Organizations request mechanisms for transparency and participation in Congress during pandemic

A manifesto was signed by more than 80 Brazilian civil society organizations on Wednesday, March 25

More than 80 Brazilian civil society organizations published, this Wednesday, March 25, a manifesto calling for transparency and guaranteed social participation in the debates in the National Congress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Led by the civil society coordination office of the Mixed Parliamentary Front in Defense of Democracy and Human Rights with Public Participation, which was established in December last year, the document presents – given the restrictions on the workings of the Lower House of Congress and the Senate – ten measures necessary for the democratic participation of civil society in the decisions that will be taken by Congress on behalf of Brazilian society.

Among the main points are measures for improving the existing channels, the adoption of new tools of social participation, including direct communication channels on the topics being voted, and actions that ensure active transparency in the Lower House of Congress and the Federal Senate and the broad disclosure of its acts and resolutions.
