The manifesto, that is being promoted by Pacto pela Democracia, was signed by 45 organisations, among them Conectas, Instituto de Defesa do Direito de Defesa (The Institute for the Defence of the Right to Defence) and the Pro Bono Institute.

“The seriousness of these attacks at a precarious moment in our history demonstrates a lack of concern on the part of the country´s highest authority for our real and pressing challenges, such as tackling the Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences” says the document.

The signatories also showed their solidarity with institutions that form the basis of Brazilian democracy and “call on other authorities to fulfil their respective constitutional and legal roles in defending the rule of law”.
