Since April 1, a new leadership has been in charge of Conectas Human Rights, comprised of Lucia Nader (Executive Director), Juana Kweitel (Program Director) and Marcos Fuchs (Associate Director).

Malak Poppovic and Oscar Vilhena Vieira stepped down from the Co-Direction of Conectas and have been appointed, respectively, to the positions of Senior Advisor for Special Projects and member of the Conectas´s Board. Malak and Oscar have been committed to the consolidation of Conectas as a leading “NGO of the South”, whose international role has resulted in important breakthroughs for the human rights movement, strengthening a network of activists and academics from different countries, primarily in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It was these two former directors who first conceived of the idea that the different organizations and movements from the Global South needed to be connected in their efforts to defend and guarantee human rights. This idea materialized into the creation of Conectas, in 2001.

The transition of the leadership lasted seven months and was overseen by the Board of Directors with the support of an external consultant.

Lucia, Juana and Marcos have already been part of the team at Conectas for at least seven years. Marcos is a founding member of the organization and Executive Director of the Pro Bono Institute, an institutional partner of Conectas. Together with the previous board, they planned and developed the organization’s main projects, such as the International Human Rights Colloquium, the Sur Journal, the Fellowship Program for Portuguese-speaking Africa, the Foreign Policy and Human Rights Project and the strategic litigation program in Brazil called Artigo 1º.

As we turn 10 years old, Conectas would like to thank all those who trusted and contributed to our success and who are partners in this challenging and passionate struggle for the protection of human rights.
