Assault on democracy

Why could the anti-terrorism law criminalize social movements and violate the right to protest?

Why could the anti-terrorism law criminalize social movements and violate the right to protest? Why could the anti-terrorism law criminalize social movements and violate the right to protest?

Following the fast-track approval by the Lower House of Congress shortly after lawmakers returned from recess, the anti-terrorism bill (Bill 2016/2015) now proceeds to the Senate without any debate with society.

According to experts, besides being unnecessary and unconstitutional, the bill is full of subjective language that will enable the arbitrary application of its clauses on individuals, groups and, primarily, social movements. Activists believe that, if approved, the law will serve as a means of repressing any protest movement, violating the legitimate right to demonstrate.

But what, after all, does the bill defining terrorism actually say? Does Brazil really need a specific law for this crime? How will the law criminalize social movements and demonstrators?

Given the relevance of the topic, Conectas is organizing for Monday, September 14, a debate entitled “Anti-terrorism law: An assault on democracy”. The event will take place at 7 pm at the Eva Hertz Theater of the Livraria Cultura bookstore (Av. Paulista, 2073). It will be broadcast online by Estúdio Fluxo.
