It was with deep sorrow that we received the news of the passing of the indigenous leader Tymbektodem Arara on Saturday (14). He was a remarkable and inspiring figure from the Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Land in Pará. Tymbektodem leaves a priceless legacy to the Arara people, a recently contacted group, and to the whole of the indigenous community in Brazil.

Tymbektodem was a dedicated teacher, the President of the Kowit Association and a scholar of the Arara language. Furthermore, he was a warrior of his people and fought tirelessly for indigenous rights and for the protection of the land and natural resources that sustain their communities.

Our hearts are with the Arara community at this time of mourning and we share their sadness for this irreparable loss. Tymbektodem will be remembered as a relentless defender of indigenous rights and as an example of hope for all those who continue to fight for justice and equality.

Our thoughts are with the Tymbektodem family, his friends and comrades in the cause and with the indigenous community of Brazil. May his legacy continue to light the path towards a fairer and more respectful future for the indigenous peoples and may his memory be honoured with the continued defence of his ideals.
