Live | Redes da Maré coordinators discuss five months of federal intervention in Rio

Lidiane Malanquini and Shyrlei Rosendo participate in live discussion on Facebook.

Five months ago President Michel Temer announced federal intervention in public security in Rio de Janeiro. Under the pretext of containing organised crime and the crisis of violence in the state, in practice this measure, unprecedented since the 1988 Constitution, placed a member of military staff in charge of police actions and continued the gradual process of militarisation in this area that was already underway.

Today, official data, which is widely available and has now been systematized by the Observatório da Intervenção (intervention think tank), assesses the inefficacy of the decision and, above all, the impacts and violations stemming from military operations in this context.

On Friday 20, we invited Lidiane Malanquini and Shyrlei Rosendo, both coordinators at Redes da Maré – Somos Todos Maré, NGO working in the Maré Complex, for a live discussion, via Facebook Live, on developments, impacts and violations arising from the intervention.
