At UN, organizations denounce Bolsonaro government for ‘devastating humanitarian tragedy’

In a statement by Comissão Arns, in partnership with Conectas, organizations condemn the direction of healthcare and the economy and the president’s mockery of people’s pain

O presidente Jair Bolsonaro acompanhou, da área externa do Palácio do Planalto, em Brasília, a manifestação de apoiadores de seu governo, que está sendo realizada neste domingo (15) na capital federal e em outras cidades do país.

“The situation in Brazil is desperate,” said the representative of Comissão Arns, Maria Hermínia Tavares de Almeida, on the morning of Monday, March 15, at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. The complaint, made in partnership with Conectas Human Rights, occurred on the day that Brazil registered more than 278,000 deaths from Covid-19.

“We came here today to criticize the recurring attitudes of President Jair Bolsonaro about the pandemic. He disregards the recommendations of scientists; he has repeatedly discredited all the protection measures – such as the use of masks and social distancing; he has promoted the use of ineffective drugs; he has halted the coordination capacity of the federal health authority; he has dismissed the importance of the vaccines; he has laughed at the fears and tears of families and told Brazilians to stop ‘fussing and whining’,” they said.

The organizations also noted that all the economic and health measures in effect in the country have been implemented by the legislative and judicial branches, and by governors and mayors.

“This is why we are here today, to draw the attention of this Council and to point out the responsibility of President Bolsonaro in promoting, by word and deed, a devastating humanitarian, social and economic tragedy in Brazil,” they concluded.
