In its first periodic visit to Brazil, from September 19 to 30, the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) inspected the situation of torture and mistreatment in the country’s detention facilities. This inspection is permitted by the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture (OPCAT), which was ratified by Brazil in 2007. The group visited police stations, socio-educational institutions and secure psychiatric units in the states of Espírito Santo, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. On September 20, Conectas met with SPT and provided information on the conditions of the Brazilian prison system.
