Human rights defenders during ninth edition
of the Colloquium

The human rights defenders who participated of the 9th edition of the Colloquium compiled the proposals drawn up during the workshops and lectures at the event and produced a document with suggestions on how to increase the participation of civil society in the international mechanisms and to improve the effectiveness of these mechanisms in their promotion and protection of human rights (...)“One of the merits of this document is its purposeful approach, by presenting concrete measures for improving the UN human rights system that were drawn up democratically by the activists themselves,” pointed out Thiago Amparo, one of the organizers of the event. Prison system at Espírito Santo State continues to worsen
by the day

Police vehicle where remand prisoners can spend days waiting for a vacancy in the system in Vitória, capital of Espirito Santo state

On February 5, a commission formed by human rights organizations, among them Conectas, entered the State Women’s Penitentiary of Tucum, in the municipality of Cariacic, Espírito Santo, aware that they would encounter a complicated state of affairs. The 150 capacity prison is occupied, at the moment, by no less than 630 women.(...) This visit was not the only one made by the commission that week. The group also visited the Judicial Police Departments (DPJ) of the municipalities of Cariacica and Vila Velha, the Provisional Detention Center (CDP) of Cariacica and the Socio-Educational Internment Unit (UNIS), also in Cariacica. In all the facilities, the commission encountered extreme overcrowding and a lack of the most basic hygiene conditions and medical attention(...)
