Human Rights Fellowship Program
In partnership with the Open Society
Justice Initiative, Open Society Initiative
for Southern Africa, and a group of
African NGOs, each year Conectas hosts
an eight-month Human Rights Fellowship
Program for participants from Angola and Mozambique.
Intended to strengthen the Fellows´
in-country work when they return home,
and link them to members of human rights networks (Sur and HR Dialogue), the program hosts as many
as seven Fellows annually. Their
time in Sao Paulo is divided between
a four-month course at a Brazilian university
and a four-month internship with a local
human rights organization.
From 2004 to 2007, the program brought
19 activists from Angola, Mozambique
and East Timor to Brazil. The majority
of these activists work in their countries
of origin with the protection of an
ample array of rights: womens
rights, rights of children and adolescents,
rights of homosexuals, rights of people
deprived of their liberty, right to
physical integrity against police abuse,
right to health, among others. They
participate, coordinate and, sometimes,
create both local and international
programs.
