Last week, Conectas and 11 other organizations sent letters to the countries that voted against the amendments to UN Human Rights Council (HRC) resolution on human rights in Libya, which was approved at the 19th HRC session on 23rd March 2012 in Geneva.
Benin, Czech Republic, Djibouti, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia and United States received a letter in which the NGOs expressed concern about the rejection to the amendments that were not added to the resolution adopted.
The proposed amendments called the transitional Government of Libya to release those detained arbitrary or to bring them to trials and requested the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to monitor the situation and report it to the HRC, with a view of monitoring the case. The rejected amendments also had the aim of expressing concern about the reports of killings and ill-treatment of people of sub-Saharan African origin, as well as to investigate all human rights violations.
