Trade and Human Rights
In 2005, Conectas assembled a group
of NGOs and academics to discuss the
implications of international trade
policy for the promotion of human rights
in the southern hemisphere. This initiative
has become the basis for ongoing discussion
and roundtables among its members and
partners aimed at involving NGOs in
the human rights debates surrounding
the World Trade Organization (WTO).
At this area, Conectas has been actively
participating in the international and
national debate related to intellectual
property and access to medicines for
the treatment of HIV/AIDS. In 2006/2007,
Conectas has also been mobilizing a
couple of NGOs on the "Retreaded
Tires case", which has been taking
place at WTO. Brazil is actively participating
in this case, by pushing its position
of protecting the environment.
Conectas has also edited publications
on the impact of international commerce
on fundamental human rights and on the
alternative ways on how human rights
activists can become engaged in this
theme.
