Welcome!
Presentation
The IX Colloquium seeks to bring together a diverse group of young activists and scholars to collectively appraise the global human rights system’s efficiency from a southern perspective. This group will also develop effective strategies for Southern civil society organizations that deal with the shortcomings of the multilateral human rights system.
In its ninth year the Colloquium carries the following theme: "An Appraisal of the Human Rights System from a Southern Perspective: Common Strategies and Proposals for Reform”.
The IX Colloquium will also provide the opportunity to strengthen the collaborative work between different generations of Colloquium participants. 2009 participants will be responsible for evaluating the results of the previous eight Colloquia and helping to define the program and structure for the 2010 and 2011 Colloquia.
For the first time this year, Colloquium participants will be exclusively selected from a group of activists who have participated in previous Colloquia and who have demonstrated continued interest and initiative in collaborating with other activists from the southern hemisphere.
As in previous years, the program of activities will be composed of lectures, seminars and working groups. In the morning sessions, participants will attend lectures. In the afternoon sessions, they will take part in workshops, working groups and visits to organizations. (See Program)
The selection process will also take into account race, gender, regional origin, and socioeconomic background.
After the selection and until the Colloquium begins, participants will take part in introductory activities and be responsible for some preparatory readings .
The IX Colloquium is sponsored by the Open Society Institute and the Ford Foundation, among others.
We are looking forward to receiving your applications and seeing you in São Paulo!
