History

Since 2001, the Colloquium has provided every year a unique opportunity for human rights defenders from the global south to increase their knowledge and exchange experiences. It has brought together over 600 activists and academics within the human rights community from over 53 countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Many participants have continued to share information and to join efforts to work together on shared human rights priorities through the Human Rights Dialogue Network and Sur - Human Rights University Network.

During the first three years, the Colloquium was conceived by the Human Rights University Consortium, which included the University of Sao Paulo, the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo and Columbia University in New York. Conectas Human Rights was responsible for its organization.

Since the IVth Colloquium, the event has been conceived and organized by Conectas Human Rights (www.conectas.org) together with SUR – Human Rights University Network.

How to continue working together after the Colloquium?

HRDialogue is a network of former participants of the International Human Rights Colloquium working in the Global South (Africa, Asia and Latin America) that seeks to:

"Strengthen the voice and impact of human rights advocates from the South."

Members promote ongoing dialogue, exchange experiences and act to::

  • Enhance activities and capabilities of human rights advocates
  • Strengthen the impact of human rights organizations, and
  • Stimulate collaborative action in the Global South

The Colloquium’s participants share an on-line interactive space: the portal ConectaSur (www.conectasur.org), where they are able to publish news about their work and seek collaboration with their colleagues to develop joint activities. The news published in the ConectaSur Portal are sent to all former participants fortnightly.
